The Messengers and Storytellers workshop is on Saturday, February 18, 2012. Students will explore the mystery of three-dimensional figures, creating figures of polymer clay using a variety of surface design techniques and embellished with beads, fibers and personal treasures. Inspiration will come from earlier cultures and also from easy whimsical designs collaged from two-dimensional imagery. Doors and hiding places will be explored as part of the design. The Messengers can have secret places to hide a message or object, the Storytellers can house a small book and both can incorporate removable jewelry.

On Sunday, February 19, Rattle Beads and Pendants workshop includes a survey of ancient cultures as inspiration for sound-making beads and pendants. There will be several ways for creating the rattles along with easy variations. Techniques for surface designs will be many and varied and include millefiori applique, embossing and texture. Carved and sculptural elements will adorn the rattles and also serve as bead caps.

The final workshop, The Unfolding Pyramid, will take place on Monday, February 20, 2012. Explore the mysteries of ancient civilizations as students peek through windows, unlock and walk through doors into the world of sculptural books. Using polymer clay, beautiful papers, and other elements, students will create freestanding, three-dimensional ”books that are sculptures” or visa versa. Personal imagery, found objects and other mixed media will be combined with polymer clay to create a pyramid structure that unfolds to reveal a hidden surprise. Polymer clay techniques include transferring photocopy imagery, carving and antiquing, making and using three dimensional clay pieces.

Each workshop costs $125, with multi-day discounts available. Lunch is included each day and a casual reception with the artist is scheduled for Friday, February 17, 2012.
