Polymer Clay News for week of October 29
November Meeting – New Time and Location
Our get-together will take place on Sunday, November 4, at 2 PM. This month we will be meeting at the Florida Society of Goldsmiths Studio at 661 Industrial Drive in Railroad Square. The studio is between Athena’s Garden and Krank it Up Bicycle Shop. We have permission from the FSGNW leadership to meet there on an ongoing basis if we wish. See section about future meetings, below.
Plenty of free parking, we’ll meet in the front gallery and Barbara will give tours of the studio. Bring a cold (or warm?) drink and maybe a small snack to share.
This is an open clay day – bring whatever you want to work on and bring items for show & tell. Feel free to bring non-clay projects, too.
Future Meetings
We have word back from Tallahassee Parks & Rec that we can use Lafayette Arts & Crafts center on the 1st Saturday of the month if we can hold a monthly class there from which the fees collected cover our rental of the space. Pat Pittman (director) says that she hasn’t had luck with ongoing polymer classes, so Barbara suggested the Guild hold short, project based classes once a month. Pat really likes the idea and is enthusiastic about putting these project classes on the calendar and promoting them.
The Lafayette Arts & Crafts Center would be a great location for us, but would require the following changes/commitments from the membership:
- Change our regular meeting date to the 1st Saturday of the month. We can add a Sunday (optional) meeting later in the month if there is interest.
- Members would need to commit to the planning and teaching of a monthly class at the Center.
- These classes would be on a Saturday or a weekday evening and would last 2-3 hours.
- The classes need to be family-friendly and we should specify that anyone under a certain age (14?) needs to be accompanied by an adult. All classes should be organized in such a way that younger students would not need to handle blades. For example, if we did an ornament class, adults could be trusted to cut cane slices to cover a glass ball but children would be texturing clay and using cookie cutters to cut out shapes for baking.
- The teacher would be donating her/his time, but can collect a small materials fee to cover supplies. Lafayette Arts & Crafts would collect class fees and these would be credited to our room rental account.
- Most importantly: The responsibility for these classes cannot fall on one or two active members. This needs to be a group commitment. If six members commit, that means each person only teaches every 6 months on a rotation.
Here are some ideas for classes:
- December Holiday Ornaments (textured & glittered snowflake cutouts or covering glass balls, Dreidels for Hanukkah)
- January: Valentine Heart Pendants (Ellen has signed up for this one)
- February Cover a ball-point pen or crochet hook
- March Sculpt a bunny or Springtime Candle holder (decorate small glass candleholder with cut outs of leaves, flowers, etc.)
We would know after a couple of months if the class idea will work and ‘pay our way’ for the room rental. Please be prepared to discuss/commit to this idea at the meeting on Sunday. If it doesn’t work out, we can continue meeting on the 1st Sunday at the FSGNW studio.
