Leaf it Alone Challenge and Jewelry Wardrobe Workshop Weekend

All Hail our Mighty Volunteers!

We conquered the mountain of Bic pens with 27 students this past Saturday! It was really a great class, and the students took to the project like ducks to Lake Ella. Thank you to all the volunteers: Barbara, Bettye, Diana, Ellen, Lizette, and Nancy.

Our next class at Lafayette Arts & Crafts Center  will be in December and we’ll be facilitating the making of Holiday Ornaments.

Jewelry Wardrobe Weekend

Members of  the Northwest Chapter of the Florida Society of Goldsmiths are hosting a workshop weekend November 7 & 8. There will be two classes from 10 AM to 4 PM each day. Topics are as follows:

  • Saturday: Kumihimo (Japanese Braiding) or Cold Connections (Metalwork)
  • Sunday: Polymer Clay Faux Techniques or Precious Metal Clay Basics

The classes are only $50 each plus kit fees. Registration is open now and you can get all the details and see pictures of the projects on the FSGNW website.

Monthly Meeting is Saturday, October 3

As per usual, Lafayette Arts & Crafts Center, 11:45 AM until 4 PM.

Meeting theme: Don’t LEAF it Alone Challenge

Make a shaded leaf cane in the colors of your choice (greens, autumn colors or fantasy colors) using Elaine Robitaille’s excellent tutorial:

http://www.tooaquarius.com/tutorials/shaded-leaf-cane/

Bring enough supplies so that when the cane is reduced to 1/2″ tall, everyone at the meeting can take home about 2-3″ of the cane. Before our next meeting, make something using the canes, adding additional clay and embellishments as you desire.

At our November meeting, bring back the item you make with the canes. We’ll have a little contest to find out who we think used the canes to the best advantage. There may even be a prize for the winner!

Kathleen Dustin in St. Augustine

First Coast Polymer Clayers in St. Augustine are hosting 2 workshops with Kathleen Dustin in January and have invited the Tallahassee Guild Members to attend.  The dates are as follows:

January 17-18: New Translucent Techniques In Polymer Clay

2-day workshop for all levels except beginner (know how to make Skinner blend and simple canes).

While making a brooch, each student learns how to layer translucent polymer clay to produce a rich depth of surface using polymer heat-set paints, simple millefiore, gold leaf and powder inclusions, carving, sanding and buffing. At the same time, Kathleen presents basic artistic principles to aid students in making decisions as they work with this involved technique.

January 19-20: Large Hollow Beads

2-day workshop for all levels except beginner (know how to make a Skinner blend and simple canes).

It’s wonderful when large beads can be visually statement-making, but it’s not enjoyable  when they are too heavy to wear comfortably. In this workshop, Kathleen will teach constructing and assembling large light-weight hollow beads in organic/geometric shapes, then covering them with polymer patterns using a variety of techniques. As in her other workshops, Kathleen will also discuss basic design principles as she leads students through inventing and making their own beads.
