Kris Shotts will be here to demonstrate how to make a wonderfully versatile rainbow cane. Supplies list and instructions for making necessary components in advance is below.

This class requires preparation of skinner blend plugs for use in the class

Supply List

  • 1 ounce each of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple polymer clay.
  • 1 & 1/2 ounces of white for each color above.  About 10 ounces of white polymer in total.
  • 4 ounces of black for wrapping the Skinner Blend bullseye plugs and to create triangle canes for filler.

Preparation Required before Class

  1. Prep (condition) each color for making skinner blends.
  2. Make a Skinner blend using 1 ounce of red with 1 & 1/2 ounce white.
  3. Repeat with the remaining colors.
    • You should have 6 skinner blends
  4. Condense and roll up each blend into a 1 & 1/2 inch bullseye plug (white in the middle).
  5. Condition the black and make a thin wrap around each of the Skinner blend plugs.
  6. Make a triangle cane in black, to use as filler in the rainbow cane.

Update from Nancy

My friend gave me a heat gun recently.  I tried it on the canes applied to glass and it’s very useful.

Swiping a heat gun over canes several times softens the clay a bit to help the burnishing process.  It’s faster and helps leveling high spots.

Only a few quick  swipes with the heat gun over the canes no more otherwise you cook the clay!
