Florida 500 Native Wildflowers Exhibition – Call for Artists

FLOR500 is a participatory art, nature, and history project created by Miami artist Xavier Cortada to commemorate Florida’s quincentennial in 2013. The project marks the importance of the moment when the history of our state changed forever and gives us a glimpse of what its landscape was like 500 years ago.

Five hundred Floridians will be invited to depict 500 native wildflowers – the same ones that grew in our state when Juan Ponce de Leon landed in 1513 and named it “La Florida”–from “flor,” the Spanish word for flower. A team of scientists is selecting the 500 flowers. The artwork, along with information about each flower, will be posted on the project website (http://www.xaviercortada.com/?page=FLOR500_flowers).

Students from 500 schools across the state’s 67 counties (across 8 regions) will then plant 500 wildflower gardens dedicating them to one of 500 important Floridians selected by a team of historians.  These 500 new native habitats will help support Florida’s biodiversity.

LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts is pleased to present the 13th Annual Chain of Parks Art Festival Saturday and Sunday, April 20 – 21, 2013 from 10 am to 5 pm in Tallahassee’s downtown Chain of Parks.

This annual two-day event draws tens of thousands of people from around the Big Bend/Southeast region to see 125+ artists who have traveled from all over the country to display their original works of fine art for sale and be judged by a juried panel in their media category.  Visitors stroll through beautiful downtown Tallahassee parks, under the stately live oaks, and enjoy our beautiful city in the height of Spring’s grandeur.

The newly updated layout for the festival will include art education components for the kids, ramped up live entertainment with a variety of musical acts as well as local theater crews performing on the stage and around the parks, a host of local restaurants and caterers to provide their fares – all adding up to complete the perfect outdoor Fine Art affair.  This event is for the entire family, lovers of art and beyond.
