Veneers That Stretch Like Canvas

Patty has been having a lot of fun seeing just how thin a sheet of clay can be rolled out and applied to various surfaces, with switch plates being her favorite.  She will demonstrate a technique that involves the simple building and stacking of rolls to achieve eye-pleasing designs.  The thinly pressed sheets require translucent clays to be incorporated in a variety of clay types and hues.  Translucent clay adds a pliability that resists accuracy in outcome but adds to the charm!  The solid slabs she uses are exclusively from scraps that have been blended together to produce their own surprise colors.  She will also show results of the fabric-texture technique for patterns seen in the photos below.

Supply List

  • At least four conditioned clay colors rolled out using pasta setting #2 (second thickest)
  • A half block or so of while or pearl white
  • Any surface you want to cover such as a switch plate or glass candle holder or cardboard box, etc….
  • Translucent clay – either Cernit or Sculpey are fine
  • Basic tools – roller, cutter, poker, exacto knife, creativity and a healthy embrace of ambiguity in the outcome
